In.grained
Popovich Associates
An artistic public garden exhibition for Cool Gardens along the city-central esplanade in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
2015
Drawing inspiration from the region’s Agricultural and Textile heritage, the concept’s arrangement follows loose-flowing poles, presenting a unique visual and audible experience reminiscent of iconic prairie wheat fields. Macro-scaled wheat grains provide ample seating that is comfortable and conscious of lifecycle. A luxury within the urban environment, these malleable pod seats provide patrons with the opportunity for group interaction or shade and seclusion, as they are encouraged to move and adjust the furniture as needed. ‘In.grained’ invites dialogue between visitors of all ages, through contemplation and conversation on the possibilities of cultural experiences both past and future.
An alternative concept for the public garden exhibition thematically focused on the ephemerality of the transitory edge experience between two distinctive natural zones, such as the aspen woodland and tall grass prairie. The concept was grounded in the embodiment of ‘assimilation’ - the merginig of one homogeneity of form into another in the cultural sense and one sound into another in the auditory sense.
